Kerala flood relief campaign - Facts and Figures

Hundreds have died and several lakhs have been rendered homeless in a flood-hit Kerala. Relief teams have been working tirelessly to rescue people and ensure food, water and medicines reach each and every person in the state. Help has been pouring in from all over the world.

Flood losses:

  • The deluge that has ravaged Kerala may cull the services and consumption-driven state’s economy by 100 bps, with the highest loss being seen in tourism and hospitality, labour and the Kochi industrial belt.
  • Over 400 people have been killed since August and these has been a colossal loss of property, agriculture, and infrastructure, which the state has estimated around Rs. 21,000 crores.
  • The rain-hit state’s GDP is expected to fall to 6.5-7 percent from the budgeted 7.6 percent this fiscal year. 66 percent GDP comes from the services, with industry contributing for only 26 percent of it. Out of the 66 percent, only tourism and hospitality contribute 40 percent of the state’s GDP. The massive damages in the Ernakulam/ Kochi region, which is the highest industrial and tourism contributor to the state’s GDP, could only see a gradual recovery the next fiscal year.
  • With 10,000 km of district, state and national highways been washed away, the damage to the road accounts to over Rs. 12,000 crores, while the figure for airport is nearly 40 crores.
  • The plantation sector is also badly hit. The rubber sector is staring at an estimated loss of Rs. 420 crores, while the hit to the tea industry is pegged at Rs. 35-40 crores.
  • On the estimated cost of relief operations, sustaining the over one million people in relief camps on a consistent basis will involve a minimum Rs 10 crores a day or Rs 300 crores a month. This would have to be financed from either relief grants from the Centre or contributions by others.
